YouTuber's £17 EasyJet Flight from 'UK's Best Airport' Reveals Hidden Costs

Budget airline easyJet is renowned for offering some of the most competitive prices for flights across Europe, but as YouTuber Nathan Emmings discovered, travellers need to pay close attention when booking to avoid unexpected expenses. In a recent video, Nathan shared his experience of flying from what he calls "the UK's best airport" to Alicante for just £17, though he quickly learned there was a significant catch involved.

EasyJet's Unbundled Pricing Strategy

EasyJet operates on an "unbundled" pricing model, where the base ticket covers only the flight and a carry-on bag. Additional services, such as checked baggage or seat selection, come at an extra cost. Nathan explained, "This flight was costing £17, but the seat in general cost £30. So already you can see how these low-cost airlines are making their money. It's clever, and well, it sucked me in, that's for sure, because I paid the extra for the seat." This dynamic pricing structure means ticket prices fluctuate based on demand, often increasing if travellers delay their booking.

The Southend Airport Experience

Despite the initial sticker shock over seat fees, Nathan was highly impressed with his journey, starting at London Southend Airport, which he praised as the country's number one airport. He highlighted the efficiency of the check-in and security processes, noting, "Southend airport has got the new security system whereby nothing has to come out of your bag. That just streamlines the process even more. So, the sort of thing where liquids into separate bags and stuff like that being shot out is that really a thing of the past." He added that from entering the airport to reaching the waiting area, it took no longer than five minutes, calling it "absolutely incredible."

Tips to Avoid Extra Fees

Nathan offered a practical tip to avoid Southend Airport's £8 drop-off fee: "Please, I cannot stress this enough. Get dropped off at the McDonald's because that will save you £8." Once on board, his experience improved further when he found his chosen seat in an empty row, a rare luxury on budget flights. He humorously noted, "You can pay four or five hundred pounds for European business class just to get one free seat next to you. So you could argue that it could be actually cheaper just to book the seat next to you for someone else and just put them down as a no-show," though he quickly clarified, "I'm not actually advising that!"

Seasonal Considerations and Final Verdict

Nathan acknowledged that during peak holiday seasons, the same trip might be less relaxed, and easyJet's dynamic pricing could lead to much higher fares. However, he strongly recommended Southend Airport as a superior alternative to busier hubs like Stansted and Luton, stating, "The whole Southend Airport experience was absolutely incredible. I cannot sing its praises enough." His journey underscores the importance of vigilance when booking budget flights to fully enjoy the benefits without falling prey to hidden costs.
