Travel agent Ashley Quint of Traveltime World has identified five summer holiday destinations that offer better value than traditional European hotspots like Greece, Spain, and Portugal. According to Quint, long-haul options such as Mauritius, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Canada, and Japan can provide higher-quality accommodations for the same price as a five-star all-inclusive in Greece.
Why Traditional Hotspots Are Losing Their Appeal
Quint noted that Greece, the Canary Islands, and Italy have become increasingly expensive for all-inclusive breaks, prompting Brits to seek alternatives. "Italy has become extortionately priced if you're doing high-end all-inclusive," he said. "People are saying, 'I'm not willing to pay that.'"
The travel agent observed a marked shift since the pandemic, with more travelers considering long-haul destinations due to their "pricing value in the summer." While Europe remains popular for guaranteed sunshine, Quint argues that looking further afield can yield more value.
Compromising on Weather for Better Value
However, these destinations require a compromise on weather. For instance, July and August fall in Thailand's monsoon season, with intense but brief rainfall. Sri Lanka's monsoon season ends over summer, offering hot, dry weather with occasional downpours. Mauritius enjoys balmy 25°C temperatures but cooler evenings.
"Some families are not always after the sunshine," Quint explained. "They want a little bit of beach at the end, but if it's cloudy, it's cloudy." He emphasized that those willing to accept less predictable weather can find quieter spots and better deals.
Value Comparison: Quality Over Price
Quint clarified that these destinations may not be cheaper overall but offer higher-quality hotels for similar prices. A five-star all-inclusive in Mauritius or Sri Lanka could cost the same as a three-star in Greece, providing better value for money. "If you're looking at staying in a five-star all-inclusive hotel in Greece, you could go very easily long-haul and do something for less than that, during the summer," he said.
Growing Interest in Alternative Destinations
Destinations like Madeira and Croatia have also seen a boost in interest as Brits seek value. Quint noted that trends shift year to year: "It often varies year to year. But you do see it swings from one place to another, depending on what their perceived value is."
For travelers willing to avoid crowds and explore, these five long-haul options could tick all the boxes. More information is available at traveltimeworld.co.uk.
