Arthur Fery and Flavio Cobolli Clash Again After Controversial Australian Open Incident
Fery and Cobolli Renew Rivalry After Controversial AO Incident

Arthur Fery will face Flavio Cobolli in the Wimbledon quarter-finals on Wednesday, a match that revives their history from the Australian Open in January, where a controversial net touch complaint was dismissed after video review.

Fery's Fairytale Run at Wimbledon

Fery, 23, has become the last Brit standing in either singles draw at SW19 after a remarkable run. He defeated Damir Dzumhur in the first round, followed by Otto Virtanen, and then outlasted Belgian No. 1 Zizou Bergs in a 4-hour 38-minute marathon that ended in five sets. In the fourth round, Fery stunned Grigor Dimitrov 7-5, 3-6, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (10-7) to set up the quarter-final clash.

Controversy at the Australian Open

This is Fery's first Grand Slam quarter-final, but he has met Cobolli before in a major tournament. At the Australian Open in January, Fery beat the No. 20 seed Cobolli in straight sets, but the opening set was marred by controversy. At 3-3, Fery held two break points and ventured close to the net during a point. Cobolli's cross-court shot went wide, but the Italian complained that Fery had touched the net, which is illegal in tennis.

Cobolli appealed to the umpire, and a video review was requested. Both players became irate during the lengthy wait. TNT Sports commentator Paul Hand noted, "It's a good call. Did he indeed touch the net before the ball went out? They will go upstairs and check that out." After the review, Hand added, "A curious look from Flavio Cobolli to the umpire to say, can we crack on with things please? Pretty agile there, contorting his body out of the way of the net, looks like he didn't touch it."

The review concluded that Fery had not touched the net. Reflecting on the incident, Fery said, "I knew I hadn't really touched the net, so I guess more time to recover." Despite the distraction, Fery won the first set in a tie-break and closed out the match 7-6 (7-1), 6-4, 6-1.

What's at Stake

Fery will now face Cobolli again on Centre Court, aiming to repeat his upset. A win would send the British wildcard into the semi-finals, continuing his dream run at Wimbledon.
