Altrincham's Market Revival Transforms Town into Foodie Destination
Altrincham's Market Revival Boosts Town as Food Hub

Nestled just 30 minutes from Manchester, the market town of Altrincham has undergone a remarkable transformation, evolving from a quiet rural area into a bustling hub for food, shopping, and picturesque landscapes. This small but mighty town was put back on the map after reopening its huge indoor food market, now drawing thousands of visitors and fostering a thriving community.

The Catalyst for Change

Over a decade ago, Altrincham was a much quieter place, with closed-down shops and a high street that lacked appeal. However, the reopening of Altrincham Market in 2014 with a contemporary, trendy twist served as the catalyst for change. The Altrincham Market & Market House revitalised the area, reviving the modern market town concept and establishing a huge culinary scene from independent eateries.

A Foodie Heaven

Located in a stunning Grade II-listed building with steel beams and arched windows, the covered market offers a spacious seating area where visitors can sample delights from six kitchens and two bars. Described as an independent foodie heaven, it features wood-fired pizza from Honest Crust, flat iron steak and chips from Tender Cow, and delicious pies from Great North Pie Co. Craft beers at Jack in the Box, beverages at Reserve Wines, and coffee at Market House Coffee add to the experience.

The food market operates Tuesday to Saturday from 9am to 10pm, and Sunday from 9am to 6pm. Additionally, a shopping area with traders selling vintage fashion, homeware, artisan goods, and crafts is open Friday 8am to 3pm, Saturday 8am to 4pm, and Sunday 10am to 4pm.

Visitor Experiences

Visitors have praised the market for its casual atmosphere and great food. One TripAdvisor review noted, Sitting down in the old market halls in Altrincham is an experience you don't want to miss, while another called it absolutely fabulous with a wonderful atmosphere. However, some noted that seating can be tough at peak times, and an ordering app may not always be reliable.

Beyond the Market

Altrincham offers more than just its market. The town boasts green spaces and parks, along with paths along the picturesque River Bollin. A short drive away, the National Trust Dunham Massey Hall & Gardens provides sprawling grounds with a deer park and a country manor that served as Stamford Military Hospital during World War I.

The town centre features a catalogue of high-street and independent shops, along with diverse eateries such as Damo’s for Italian, Papa Dutch for pancakes, Porta for tapas, and Nahm Prik for Thai cuisine. Bars like Costello's Bar, Cheshire Tap, and Kennedy's Irish Bar offer spots to catch up with friends, while cosy cafes like Gran T's Coffee House and Two Brothers Coffee provide hot drinks.

Entertainment Options

For entertainment, Altrincham is home to Planet Ice, a sprawling ice skating rink with public sessions and the Manchester Storm ice hockey team. The Altrincham Little Theatre and Altrincham Garrick Theatre present stage productions, and Inch Arts offers workshops and events, ensuring there is plenty to keep everyone entertained during a visit.

This charming town has successfully leveraged its market revival to become a must-visit destination, blending history, community, and a vibrant food scene to attract visitors from near and far.
