Buc-ee's Mega Gas Station Chain Expands West, Bringing Texas-Style Pit Stops Closer to California
Buc-ee's Expansion Brings Texas-Style Pit Stops Near California

The iconic Texas-born mega gas station chain Buc-ee's is charging westward, bringing its supersized travel centers within striking distance of California for the first time. While the Golden State itself remains without a location, the company has announced plans to open a new outpost in Goodyear, Arizona, in 2026, positioned just off Interstate 10 and roughly a two-hour drive from the California border at Blythe.

Arizona Outpost Brings Buc-ee's Closer to West Coast Road-Trippers

For Californians craving brisket sandwiches, Beaver Nuggets, and famously spotless restrooms, the Goodyear location will be the closest Buc-ee's has ever been. This well-traveled stretch of highway is popular with drivers heading to Phoenix, Scottsdale, and destinations farther east, while the surrounding desert terrain also attracts outdoor enthusiasts for hunting and off-roading adventures.

Why California Might Never Get Its Own Buc-ee's

Despite the proximity, most fans believe California will never host a Buc-ee's of its own. In online discussions, such as the 'Buc-ees Lovers' Facebook group, responses have been blunt. One user stated, 'Never... need sane people first,' while another wrote, 'California doesn't deserve Buc-ee's.' Critics point to the state's perceived anti-gas and fossil fuel stance, with one commenter noting, 'Why would a place with 100 fuel pumps come to California?' Others humorously suggested California locations would sell tofu sandwiches and feature electric plug-ins instead.

Buc-ee's: More Than Just a Gas Station

Buc-ee's has transformed pit stops into destinations, earning a cult following, particularly among Gen-Z, thanks to its social media-friendly snacks and over-the-top scale. Fan favorites include the Sausage on a Stick, Dr Pepper Icees, and an entire wall of jerky. The chain's football-field-sized travel centers pack in hundreds of pumps, award-winning restrooms, and an overwhelming selection of snacks, souvenirs, and Texas-themed merchandise.

Rapid Expansion Across the United States

By the end of 2026, Buc-ee's plans to open four more iconic outposts, with another 15 locations in the pipeline for subsequent years. Florida, Tennessee, and Arkansas are set to see the most new Buc-ee's as the chain pushes deeper into the Southwest and Midwest. The company, which started in Texas in 1982, now operates 54 locations across 11 states, all open 24/7, 365 days a year.

The largest Buc-ee's to date is the 75,000-square-foot station in Luling, Texas, with 120 fuel pumps, which opened in 2024 and snatched the title from a Tennessee location. Despite earlier reports, a company spokesman confirmed that Luling will remain the largest in the fleet, debunking claims about a planned Florida store being bigger. Along with the Arizona site, other 2026 openings are planned in Texas and Ohio, continuing the chain's rapid expansion beyond its Texas roots.
