Heidi Watson's Top 10 Playgrounds Worldwide Revealed

Heidi Watson Unveils the World's Most Spectacular Playgrounds

Heidi Watson, the head of innovation at Butlin's, has established herself as a leading authority on global playground design. Her expertise stems from extensive research conducted to create the £2.5 million Skypark at Butlin's in Skegness, one of the UK's most ambitious and expensive playgrounds.

The Genesis of Skypark: A Vision for Inclusive Fun

In 2021, during the coronavirus pandemic, Butlin's executives launched a major initiative to develop a groundbreaking playpark. Watson was tasked with leading this project, which evolved into the Skypark, costing £2.5 million and ranking as the second-most-expensive playground in the UK. "Our goal was to create a 'wow' experience that inspires by day and illuminates by night, honoring Butlin's legacy of classic playparks," Watson explained. The design includes a 14-meter tower, the tallest in the UK at the time, and emphasizes accessibility for all generations and abilities, featuring wheelchair-friendly equipment integrated with kinetic-powered play apparatus.

Encouraging Risk and Growth Through Play

Watson highlighted the importance of playgrounds in helping children develop risk assessment skills. "It's crucial to use playgrounds to increase risk levels in a controlled way; that's how you create meaningful challenges," she said. The Skypark's central tower is designed with escalating risk levels, allowing children to progress as they grow taller and braver on subsequent visits.
