National Lottery Open Week Returns with Major Savings for UK Visitors
Hundreds of heritage sites, museums, and popular attractions across the United Kingdom are preparing to open their doors for free or at heavily reduced prices next week as part of the National Lottery's Open Week initiative. From March 7th to March 15th, Britons can explore iconic locations like National Trust properties, the Eden Project, and Edinburgh Zoo simply by presenting a National Lottery ticket, scratch card, or Instant Win Game.
How the 25p Offer Works
The cheapest National Lottery game available is the Prize Ball Instant Win game, which costs just 25p and can be purchased online or through the National Lottery app. This minimal investment unlocks significant savings, as many participating venues typically charge substantial entry fees. For example, adult tickets to the Eden Project normally cost £42, while Culzean Castle is usually £8, and Fountains Abbey and Kingston Lacy are both priced at £23.10.
To take advantage of this offer, visitors need to present one valid National Lottery ticket per person at the entrance of a participating venue. Tickets can be physical or digital, and there is no requirement to purchase a new one if you have played in the past, regardless of the date. The offer allows entry to as many Open Week venues as desired during the promotional period.
Participating Venues and Special Extras
This year's Open Week features a diverse range of sites across the UK, with the list being regularly updated on the National Lottery website. Key participants include:
- Eden Project – free entry from March 7 to March 15
- English Heritage sites such as Carlisle Castle and Dover Castle – free entry from March 7-8 and March 11-15
- Historic Royal Palaces including the Tower of London and Hampton Court Palace – 50% off tickets
- National Trust sites like Kellie Castle and Dunham Massey – free entry
- Edinburgh Zoo – two-for-one tickets
- Giant's Causeway – free entry
In addition to free or discounted entry, many venues are offering special extras such as complimentary hot drinks and cakes in their cafes, discounts in shops and restaurants, and half-priced tours. The timing of Open Week is particularly beneficial as it overlaps with Mother's Day on March 15th, with most venues still honoring the offers on that Sunday.
The Purpose Behind National Lottery Open Week
The National Lottery states that Open Week is a way to give back to its players, acknowledging the £32 million raised weekly for Good Causes through ticket sales. A spokesperson explained, "To say thank you for the support, National Lottery funded venues are offering free entry, discounts, and special offers throughout National Lottery Open Week." The initiative aims to allow anyone who visits a National Lottery-supported project and shows a valid ticket to access these exclusive deals.
With hundreds of venues participating, from RSPB sites offering free parking to Alexandra Palace providing free entry for BBC Studio tours, this event presents a unique opportunity for affordable exploration and family outings across the UK.
