Shoe Bay, a remote beach on the private island of Eilean Shona in Scotland, offers silver sands reminiscent of the Caribbean, despite the cooler climate. The beach is part of an exclusive holiday retreat owned by Vanessa Branson, sister of Richard Branson, who purchased the island in 1995 with her former husband Robert Devereux.
Access and Accommodation
The island is only reachable by boat. Visitors typically drive three hours from Glasgow through the Highlands, or take a sleeper train to Fort William followed by a one-hour journey. From Dorlin Pier, the island’s RIB boat provides a five-minute crossing. Upon arrival, a quad and trailer transport luggage and provisions to the cottages.
Guests can rent colourful cottages, all within walking distance of Shoe Bay. The island, which inspired J.M. Barrie’s Neverland, features a former village hall now serving as a social hub with Wi-Fi, ping-pong, board games, and a weekly pub night.
Activities and Wildlife
Activities include building campfires, cooking mussels, crabbing, painting, picnicking, and exploring coastal and woodland paths. More active visitors can enjoy wild swimming, sea kayaking, or paddle boarding. Shoe Bay is home to seals, sea eagles, sea otters, red squirrels, and pine martens.
