An Unforgettable Night in a Haunted Castle After All Visitors Left

There is a uniquely thrilling sensation that comes from wandering through the grounds of a historic castle after dark, once all the day-trippers have departed. The atmosphere becomes eerily quiet, offering a rare glimpse into what life might have been like within these ancient walls centuries ago. This was precisely the experience I had during an overnight stay at Leeds Castle in Kent, often referred to as the Castle of Queens due to its long history of female residents.

The Haunted Heritage of Leeds Castle

Leeds Castle, with its somewhat confusing name derived from the Saxon leader Led or Leed, began as a modest wooden structure on two islands in the River Len. Over time, it evolved into a stone fortress and eventually the magnificent castle that became home to Catherine of Aragon, the first wife of Henry VIII. However, with such a storied past come tales of hauntings. The most famous local legend involves sightings of two black dogs, believed to be linked to a former occupant rumored to have practiced witchcraft. Additionally, there are accounts of a ghostly woman in a long, flowing dress roaming the chambers. Fortunately, my sleep remained undisturbed by any spectral visitors, and I enjoyed a solid eight hours of rest in a comfortable four-poster bed.

Luxurious Accommodations and Dining

Our accommodation was located in the Stable Courtyard, featuring a beautiful canopied bed, a soaking tub, stunning lake views, and a minibar stocked with local delicacies. Leeds Castle also offers stays in the Maiden's Tower, once home to Catherine of Aragon's ladies-in-waiting, as well as cottages and riverside lodges. During the day, guests can explore the castle and its beautifully landscaped gardens, but after the gates close, the ambiance transforms into one of tranquil peace.

That evening, we dined at the Castle View restaurant, situated just across the river from the castle. With its vast floor-to-ceiling window, we admired the castle illuminated at night. The menu focuses on simple, comforting classics made with seasonal and locally-sourced ingredients. My husband opted for a ribeye steak, cooked perfectly medium-rare, while I chose the special of cod with chorizo and a butterbean stew. The fish was flaky and delicate, pairing wonderfully with the robust beans. We also sampled a bottle of Pinot Noir from the nearby Wildshark Vineyard, which was velvety and fruity, and notably, did not cause my usual red wine headache.

Exploring the Castle and Grounds

After a restful, ghost-free night, we enjoyed breakfast in the restaurant, which offered a continental buffet and hot dishes like a full English breakfast. Upon checking out, guests are still welcome to explore the castle for the rest of the day. We took advantage of this to wander the grounds, which include a hedge maze—though we got lost in the drizzle—and a birds of prey centre with stunning owls and eagles. There are also adventure playgrounds, an artificial beach for children, and a 9-hole golf course overlooking the castle, making it a destination with activities for all seasons.

The Legacy of Lady Baillie

While Leeds Castle dates back centuries, its last private owner was Lady Olive Baillie, who restored much of the property in the 1920s and turned it into a party destination for the transatlantic elite. Notable guests included Winston Churchill and Charlie Chaplin. Fans of vintage fashion will appreciate Lady Baillie's rooms, where items like her beaded gowns and 1920s shoes are displayed, evoking a Downton Abbey-like vibe.

Spending the night at Leeds Castle is a truly memorable experience. It is rare to wake up within the grounds of such a historic site, and an overnight stay fosters a deep connection to its rich past. The castle's team, from the welcoming reception to the knowledgeable guides, ensures that every guest feels cared for, highlighting the castle's ongoing preservation. Rooms at the Stable Courtyard start from £134 per night, offering a unique blend of luxury and history.
