Trump: Iran Will Be 'Huge New Market' for American Farmers

Donald Trump has declared that Iran represents a significant new market for American farmers, following months of financial strain for a considerable portion of his support base. Speaking at a dinner held at the White House Rose Garden on Thursday evening, Trump told a group of American farmers: 'We have a new market coming up, and that's called the lovely country of Iran. It's a beautiful place. Would anybody like to go there? The Islamic Republic of Iran having a hard time with food and we're going to be taking some of their money and we'll spend it and we're going to be buying wheat, soybeans, and corn, a lot of it, and that process is going to be starting pretty soon. It's going to be big.'

Frozen Iranian Assets Could Fund Purchases

President Trump and Vice President JD Vance have indicated in recent weeks that frozen Iranian assets held abroad, worth billions of dollars, could ultimately be redirected towards purchasing agricultural exports from the United States. Iranian authorities, however, firmly dispute any such arrangement, insisting that Tehran alone would decide how any released funds are allocated.

Midterm Election Context

The gathering comes as Trump has stepped up his efforts to shore up support amongst this crucial voting bloc ahead of the midterm elections, amid mounting pressure stemming from the administration's tariff policies and rocketing fertiliser costs triggered by the Iran war. White House spokesperson Olivia Wales said in a statement: 'There is no greater champion for American farmers, growers, and ranchers than President Trump, who has negotiated new, fair trade deals, lowered input costs, bolstered the farm safety net, eliminated the death tax, ended taxes on rural property loan interest, and created rural opportunity zones.'

'For 250 years, hardworking farmers have fueled our nation, and President Trump continues to take action to help America's farmers thrive again,' she added.

Farmers as a Key Support Base

Farmers have long formed a cornerstone of Trump's support base. He swept the rural vote by 40 percentage points upon his re-election in 2024, surpassing his margins in both previous contests. Despite not featuring on the ballot himself, Trump stands to lose considerably should his party fall short in the November midterm congressional elections. Democrats require four additional seats to reclaim control of the Senate, with Iowa emerging as a key battleground. The retirement of Republican Senator Joni Ernst has handed Democrats a potential opening in the state.
