A British Airways passenger who tragically passed away during a long-haul flight was left in the aircraft's heated galley for more than thirteen hours, as fellow travellers reported complaints about an unpleasant odour developing onboard. The incident occurred on Flight BA32, an Airbus A350-1000 travelling from Hong Kong to London Heathrow.
Mid-Flight Tragedy and Controversial Decision
The female passenger, who was in her sixties, died approximately thirty minutes after take-off from Hong Kong. Despite the distressing situation, the flight crew and pilots made the decision to continue with the scheduled thirteen-and-a-half-hour journey to London rather than returning to Hong Kong. This choice has sparked discussion about airline protocols for handling in-flight medical emergencies and fatalities.
Body Storage Debate and Heated Galley
Initial suggestions from the cockpit staff involved storing the deceased passenger's body in one of the aircraft's lavatories. However, cabin crew members rejected this proposal, opting instead to place the body in a galley located at the rear of the plane. The galley featured a heated floor, a detail that some crew members reportedly overlooked during the decision-making process.
As the flight progressed towards its destination, passengers began to notice a foul smell emanating from the rear section of the aircraft. One traveller recounted to The Sun newspaper that the family of the deceased woman was understandably distraught, as were the crew members dealing with the unprecedented situation.
Passenger Reactions and Airline Response
Many passengers expressed a desire for the aircraft to return to Hong Kong following the death. However, aviation protocols typically do not classify a passenger death as an emergency requiring diversion once the individual has been declared deceased. The crew therefore focused on managing the situation within the confines of the ongoing flight.
The body was carefully isolated, wrapped in available materials, and relocated to the rear galley. Unfortunately, the heated floor in this area contributed to conditions that led to odour complaints as the flight neared its conclusion at Heathrow Airport.
Police Investigation and Aftermath
Upon landing at London Heathrow, police officers were waiting to meet Flight BA32. Passengers were instructed to remain in their seats for forty-five minutes while authorities conducted initial inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the death.
British Airways has confirmed that they are providing support to all crew members who were onboard during the incident. Some staff members have reportedly taken time off work due to trauma experienced during the flight. The airline released a statement expressing condolences to the family and friends of the deceased passenger while affirming that all proper procedures were followed.
The spokesperson emphasized that the airline is fully supporting their staff through this difficult situation. This incident highlights the challenging decisions flight crews must make when faced with medical tragedies during international flights, balancing protocol, passenger comfort, and respectful treatment of the deceased.
