Eurostar Slashes Check-In Time to 30 Minutes at St Pancras
Eurostar Cuts Check-In to 30 Minutes at St Pancras

Eurostar has unveiled a significant change to its check-in procedures at St Pancras International in London, designed to alleviate overcrowding and enhance the passenger experience. The new rule reduces the mandatory arrival time from 60 minutes to just 30 minutes before departure, making journeys more convenient and less stressful for travellers.

Streamlining the Travel Process

Currently, passengers must arrive at least 60 minutes prior to their Eurostar journey and wait in the departures area. Under the revised system, this window will be halved, allowing for a quicker and more efficient process. According to reports from The Telegraph, plans are in place to enable passengers to board their train as soon as it arrives at St Pancras, thereby reducing congestion in the departure lounge.

A Shift Towards Train-Like Travel

Wendy Spinks, Chief Commercial Officer at London St Pancras Highspeed, emphasised the goal of making Eurostar travel feel more like a traditional train journey rather than an airport experience. She stated, "It cannot be the equivalent of an airport departure lounge. We see it being a really quick process. Going straight to the train is part of the plan. It has become too close to the airport experience, where you check in, go to security, wait in the lounge and then rush to the gate." This change addresses bottlenecks that have hindered service expansion and the use of all five available platforms for international trains.

Expansion and Competition on the Horizon

The rule adjustment comes as Eurostar prepares for major expansions, including the introduction of double-decker trains and new direct routes to Frankfurt and Geneva, expected to launch from early 2030. Additionally, by that time, Virgin Trains and Italian operator Trenitalia are anticipated to offer rival services from St Pancras, challenging Eurostar's monopoly on the Channel Tunnel route. Any new operators would share platforms with Eurostar, requiring passengers to ensure they board the correct train.

Infrastructure Upgrades at St Pancras

To support these developments, St Pancras has recently installed new kiosks equipped with technology for the EU's entry and exit system (EES), mandatory at all external border crossing points by April 9. Last summer, Eurostar and London St. Pancras Highspeed announced a collaborative £100 million project to double the station's capacity, enabling it to handle 5,000 international passengers per hour.

The upgrades, set for completion by the end of 2028, will improve the international area and its connection to the main concourse, enhancing passenger flow and customer experience. A further phase, expected by the end of 2030, could redirect arriving passengers to a lesser-used upstairs area. Speculation suggests that these expansions might eventually reduce check-in times to as little as 15 minutes, allowing travellers to proceed directly to their service without lengthy waits.
