Saturday’s headline ITV fixture at Haydock was delayed after the discovery of a hole in the middle of the track. The meeting, set to feature two key Royal Ascot trials – the Temple and Sandy Lane Stakes, both Group races – was halted following an incident in the opening contest.
Incident in the Opening Race
The meeting opened with the Listed Hedge Of Oak Stakes, broadcast live by ITV Racing. The John and Thady Gosden-trained Friendly Soul was the hot favourite despite being off the track since October 2024. Under champion jockey Oisin Murphy, the mare appeared to take a false step while in contention and was immediately eased. Friendly Soul dropped away and was pulled up but was able to walk back without requiring immediate veterinary attention.
Track Inspection
Officials walked down the track to inspect the area where the incident occurred. They were joined by trainer John Gosden and jockey Duran Fentiman, who prodded the surface with a stick. It became immediately evident that the stick went into the ground much deeper in one spot than other parts of the track. Further shots showed a groundsman able to push his arm into the hole up to his shoulder.
BHA stewards posted: “Delay to Race 2 at Haydock due to inspection.” More to follow.
