Hundreds of pubs and bars across the UK, including several in Liverpool, have been granted permission to remain open until 5am on Monday, July 6, for England's World Cup knockout match against Mexico. The game kicks off at 1am, allowing fans to watch the entire match in licensed venues.
Government Decision and Quotes
The extension to licensing hours followed a last-minute decision by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer. He stated: "Football might be coming home, but we're making sure fans don't have to." He added that the move supports fans and provides a boost for pubs that bring communities together.
Participating Pub Chains
Major chains including Boxpark, Young's, and Fuller, Smith & Turner will open late. Greene King confirmed 600 of its pubs nationwide will stay open. Brand and marketing director Andrew Gallagher said: "We are delighted to have received permission to trade later... the atmosphere in pubs provides the perfect setting for fans to come together and celebrate." Only five Wetherspoons pubs will extend hours, none in Merseyside.
Liverpool and Merseyside Venues
A full list of participating venues in Liverpool and Merseyside has been compiled. Greene King urged customers to book early due to high demand. Independent pubs are also joining the late openings, though specific names were not disclosed in the initial announcement.
