Lumo's 'Ryanair of Trains' Launches Budget London-Scotland Fares Under £30

In a significant move for affordable rail travel, Lumo has launched ticket sales for its new West Coast Main Line service, with prices starting from less than £30 for journeys between London and Scotland. Dubbed the 'Ryanair of trains' due to its great-value pricing, the operator aims to simplify and economise travel on this popular route.

Affordable Fares and Extensive Route Network

Customers can now book advance tickets for travel commencing from 10 July through the end of summer. Notable fares include:

  • London to Stirling for £29.90
  • London to Preston for £23.90
  • Preston to Stirling for just £14.90

Further savings are available through rail cards, and the Lumo website imposes no booking fees, enhancing the budget-friendly appeal. The new route will connect London Euston and Stirling, with intermediate stops at Milton Keynes, Nuneaton, Crewe, Preston, Carlisle, Lockerbie, Motherwell, Whifflet, Greenfaulds, and Larbert.

Service Expansion and Operational Details

Lumo plans to operate four daily return services between Stirling and London, supplemented by an additional Preston–London return service. The company will utilise refurbished Class 222 trains, featuring refreshed interiors and entirely new seating in some carriages. Operating a single-class standard service, Lumo is designed exclusively to offer low-cost fares.

This expansion is intended to improve travel choices for customers while providing direct long-distance connections for communities currently underserved by rail. The operator has confirmed the opening of a new headquarters for its West Coast service in Preston, creating approximately 100 new jobs and supporting the local economy. The Preston base is scheduled to open on 20 March 2026.

Leadership and Strategic Vision

Stuart Jones, managing director of First Rail Open Access, emphasised the customer-centric approach: 'These fares are about putting customers first. By offering simple, low-cost tickets and direct services between Scotland, the North West of England and London, we're making it easier and more affordable for people to travel for work, leisure and family visits.'

He added, 'Launching Lumo on the West Coast Main Line is an exciting step forward, and with our new base in Preston creating jobs and supporting the local economy, this is a service that will benefit both passengers and communities along the route.'

Broader Context and Recent Developments

Lumo, known for its bargain prices on routes between London King's Cross and Edinburgh, first launched in the UK in 2021 with an all-electric fleet. In December, the company announced a new service from Glasgow, linking to Falkirk, Edinburgh, the North East of England, and London, with tickets priced from £33.10 from London to Glasgow and as little as £10.90 between Newcastle and Glasgow.

The inaugural Glasgow service departed on 16 December 2025, arriving at London King's Cross one minute early, celebrated with music performances and comedy. While services departing after 10 July are currently on sale, earlier services are expected to be added in the coming weeks, anticipating a launch ahead of July. Tickets for the new route are available for purchase on Lumo's website.
