The northbound carriageway is fully closed between junction 41 for Catterlen and Hutton-in-the-Forest and junction 42 for Carlisle south. The closure was implemented after flooding, first reported at 2:42am, spread to all three northbound lanes by approximately 3:55am. Additionally, lane three on the southbound side is also closed, further reducing capacity on this vital transport link.

National Highways has established a formal diversion route to guide stranded motorists. Drivers are being directed off the motorway at junction 41 and onto the A6 road. This alternative route runs parallel to the M6 but travels through the rural Cumbrian villages of High Hesket and Low Hesket.
