Manston Airport Kent Moves Closer to Reopening as Freight Hub

Manston Airport in Kent, which has been dormant since scheduled flights ceased in 2014, is now taking significant strides toward reopening as a specialised air freight hub. Investment firm RiverOak Strategic Partners (RSP), which purchased the site seven years ago, is set to initiate a public consultation on the ambitious proposals.

Operational Target and Strategic Importance

RSP aims to have the airport fully operational by 2029, positioning it as a crucial alternative to the heavily congested London airports for importing essential goods. This move is expected to alleviate pressure on existing infrastructure and boost regional economic growth.

Development Consent Order and Consultation Details

A Development Consent Order (DCO) for the airport's reopening was originally granted in 2020, laying the groundwork for the current phase. The upcoming public consultation will run from 16 March to 22 June, providing residents and stakeholders with detailed information on proposed changes to flight paths and airspace structure.

Key aspects of the consultation include:

  • Outlining modifications to flight routes to minimise community impact.
  • Explaining adjustments to airspace design for enhanced safety and efficiency.
  • Engaging with local communities to address concerns and gather feedback.

This step marks a pivotal moment in the airport's potential revival, which could see it operational after a 12-year hiatus, transforming it into a vital logistics node for the UK's freight network.
