Newcastle United face a goalkeeping dilemma as they prepare to return for pre-season training at the KNOX later this month. Despite ongoing speculation linking 34-year-old Nick Pope with moves to Ipswich Town or Leeds United, Chronicle Live understands that no formal offers have been made for the England international.
Current Goalkeeping Situation
With Odysseas Vlachodimos' loan to Sevilla extended, Newcastle are left with two realistic first-team options between the sticks: Pope and new signing Ewen Jaouen, who arrived from Reims earlier in the window. Jaouen briefly returned to France after signing, anticipating another goalkeeping addition, but that has not yet materialised despite Newcastle's confirmed interest in Manchester City's James Trafford.
Trafford's future is expected to be decided after the World Cup, with Aston Villa, Juventus, and Brighton & Hove Albion also keen on the stopper.
Pope's Status and Future
Pope ended last season as Newcastle's first-choice goalkeeper, with the club opting against a permanent deal for Aaron Ramsdale and Vlachodimos' exit reinforcing Pope's position in the pecking order. However, if Newcastle sign Trafford or another senior stopper—as initially planned—Pope is unlikely to accept a No. 2 or No. 3 role.
Having been overlooked for the World Cup squad, Pope will return from a complete break and report for early training and testing on July 13.
Manager's Praise
Reflecting on his decision to start Pope over Ramsdale last season, which sealed Ramsdale's departure, manager Eddie Howe said: "Nick's had moments where he's not been selected before. He's a high-class person. He thinks of the team first. He's part of our leadership group for a reason, because the lads see that he's a team player fundamentally. He's been excellent, I have to say. He's been excellent."
Howe added: "You can put it into context that the role of a footballer, and especially a goalkeeper, can sometimes be very up and down. But he has to see the longer-term vision, which is he just needs to be at his very best, forget anything else about team selection. So he's really focusing on his training and the fundamentals behind that. I've got no doubt with his attitude, with the work that he'll do with the coaches, he'll be back to his very best very soon."
Contract Situation
Pope, a former Burnley and York City goalkeeper, has just one year remaining on his current deal at St James' Park.
