Passengers were forced to evacuate a train and walk along railway tracks after it collided with a fallen tree near Penkridge, Staffordshire, causing widespread cancellations and delays across key routes. The incident occurred at approximately 8:30 pm, bringing services to a halt and prompting an emergency response that saw rail staff assisting stranded travellers.
Chaotic Scenes as Train Hits Fallen Tree
Exclusive photographs reveal the chaotic aftermath, with rail personnel gathered around the immobilized train and passengers making their way along the track to safety. One commuter, who had boarded the London Northwestern Railway service at Birmingham New Street after a day's work, described the ordeal as "ridiculous," noting they were stuck onboard for a significant period before the evacuation.
Widespread Disruption Across Multiple Operators
The National Rail website confirmed that lines between Shrewsbury, Stafford, and Wolverhampton were blocked due to the obstruction, leading to trains being cancelled, delayed by up to 60 minutes, revised, or diverted. Major disruption is anticipated to persist, with delays likely to extend into Wednesday morning. Affected services include:
- London Northwestern Railway between Liverpool Lime Street, Crewe, Shrewsbury, Wolverhampton, and Birmingham New Street
- Avanti West Coast between Edinburgh, Crewe, Wolverhampton, and London Euston
- West Midlands Railway between Wolverhampton, Rugeley Trent Valley, and Walsall
Emergency Measures and Passenger Assistance
Passengers from the impacted train were eventually guided along the track to a road at Penkridge, where they boarded a rail replacement bus service. Currently, rail replacement transport is operational between Shrewsbury and Wolverhampton, as well as between Crewe and Wolverhampton in both directions, with tickets valid at no extra cost.
Avanti West Coast has advised customers that they can use one of the two services immediately before or after their booked train if it is cancelled. Those opting not to travel due to delays or cancellations can request a full refund from their point of purchase. CrossCountry and London Northwestern Railway have also issued guidance for affected passengers, including alternative travel options on Avanti West Coast services between Birmingham New Street and London Euston.
The Mirror has reached out to London Northwestern Railway for comment on the passenger experience during this unsettling incident. While such evacuations are standard procedure in rare emergencies, the disruption highlights vulnerabilities in rail infrastructure during adverse weather conditions, with repercussions felt across regional and national networks.
