Legal and Planning Framework
A 2017 settlement with the Federal Aviation Administration granted the city of Santa Monica the authority to close the airport after 31 December 2028. In preparation for this change, the city has released a draft Framework Diagram for the new park, which outlines eight distinct districts designed to cater to various community needs.
The city is actively seeking public feedback on the proposed plans to ensure the park meets local expectations and enhances the quality of life for residents. This move marks a significant shift from an aviation hub to a public amenity, reflecting evolving urban priorities in the region.
