Six Hospitalised After Two Double-Decker Buses Collide in Central London
Six individuals have been transported to hospital following a significant collision involving two double-decker buses in central London on Wednesday morning. Emergency services were promptly dispatched to the scene after the incident occurred at approximately 8:05 am.
Details of the Incident
The crash took place on Newington Causeway in Southwark, central London, and involved a route 35 bus colliding with a route 333 bus that was not in service at the time. According to Transport for London (TfL), the collision was reported at 8:05 am on Wednesday, February 18, 2026.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed that officers were called to the scene at 8:06 am. The London Ambulance Service (LAS) deployed a comprehensive response team, including ambulance crews, paramedics in fast-response cars, advanced paramedics, an incident response officer, and their Hazardous Area Response Team.
Emergency Response and Injuries
A spokesperson for the London Ambulance Service stated, "We treated a number of patients at the scene and took six of them to hospital." Fortunately, police indicated that none of the injuries were deemed life-changing or life-threatening, providing some relief amid the distressing event.
As of 10 am on Wednesday, the two double-decker buses remained visible at the crash site, with one bus appearing to have crashed into the rear of the other. The road was closed in both directions to facilitate the ongoing emergency response, as confirmed by the Metropolitan Police.
Statements from Authorities
Lorna Murphy, TfL’s director of buses, expressed concern in a statement on Wednesday, saying, "We care deeply about the safety of everyone who uses or works on our transport network and our thoughts are with the people who were injured in a bus collision this morning in Southwark."
She emphasised that safety is the top priority for TfL, adding, "Safety is our top priority and we are working with the police and the operator, Go Ahead London, to establish what happened. This must have been a distressing incident for everyone involved and we have support available for anyone affected."
Police confirmed that no arrests have been made as inquiries into the cause of the collision continue. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities collaborating to determine the exact circumstances that led to the crash.
