London Stansted Airport has implemented a significant increase in its express drop-off charges, raising the fee from £7 to £10 for stays of 15 minutes or less. For longer stops exceeding 15 minutes, the cost escalates dramatically to £28, marking a substantial shift in the airport's pricing structure.
Sustainability and Congestion Management Cited as Key Drivers
An airport spokesperson has clarified that this price hike is primarily motivated by sustainability objectives. The aim is to actively discourage 'kiss and fly' journeys, which involve quick drop-offs and pick-ups by private vehicles, thereby helping to manage and reduce congestion in the immediate vicinity of the terminal.
Promoting Public Transport Alternatives
Stansted Airport emphasises that these increased charges are part of a broader initiative to encourage greater use of public transportation. The airport reports that nearly 50 per cent of its passengers already opt for trains, coaches, or buses to access the facility. By making private vehicle drop-offs more expensive, the airport hopes to further boost these sustainable travel numbers.
The fee system operates without physical barriers, utilising advanced number plate recognition technology. Drivers are required to pay online after completing their drop-off or pick-up, ensuring a streamlined process despite the higher costs.
Part of a Wider UK Airport Trend
Stansted's move places it as the latest major UK airport to raise drop-off fees, following similar increases implemented at Gatwick, Bristol, and London City airports. This trend highlights a growing industry focus on managing terminal access and promoting environmental sustainability across the nation's air travel hubs.
The airport has noted that these charges had remained unchanged for six years prior to this increase, suggesting that the adjustment is a calculated step in its long-term operational and environmental strategy.
