England cannot call up a replacement for Jordan Henderson after the midfielder fractured his wrist in a freak accident following the 3-2 victory over Mexico, FIFA regulations confirm.
Freak Incident at Azteca Stadium
Henderson, 36, was an unused substitute in the dramatic win at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. After the full-time whistle, he attempted to vault over an advertising board to celebrate with travelling supporters but slipped and landed awkwardly on his wrist.
Defender Dan Burn noticed Henderson's distress and waved for medical assistance. The England physios quickly attended, giving him oxygen as a precaution before loading him onto a stretcher. Teammates and coaching staff huddled to shield him from cameras.
Tuchel Confirms Serious Injury
Head coach Thomas Tuchel told reporters after the match: "The doctor told me it looks quite bad. We are still unsure about the exact medical procedures or whether surgery will be required."
Henderson was rushed to a local hospital in Mexico City for scans and treatment. He did not fly back to the team's basecamp in Kansas City with the rest of the squad, staying overnight in Mexico with a member of England's medical staff.
Tournament Likely Over
Early estimations suggest a severe wrist fracture could rule Henderson out for the remainder of the tournament. England face Norway in the quarter-final in Miami on Saturday. The Football Association has not issued a definitive timeline, but the turnaround is too short for recovery. A suspected broken arm or wrist requiring surgical intervention likely ends his tournament.
FIFA Rules Prevent Replacement
According to FIFA regulations, national teams can only amend their 26-man squads before their opening group-stage match. Once the squad is locked, no additional players can be flown in during the knockout rounds, regardless of injury severity. Therefore, Tuchel must navigate the rest of the tournament with a 25-man squad.
This contrasts with Tino Livramento's injury before the tournament began. The Newcastle defender was ruled out before England's opening fixture against Croatia, allowing England to replace him with Chelsea's Trevoh Chalobah under FIFA rules.
