Lil Nas X in court over police assault charges

Grammy-winning artist Lil Nas X has appeared in a Los Angeles courtroom for a hearing concerning serious charges stemming from an incident where he was allegedly found walking naked on a city street.

The Courtroom Appearance and Legal Update

The rapper, whose legal name is Montero Hill, attended the Van Nuys West Courthouse on Monday 17 November 2025. This appearance came after he missed a previous court date because he was receiving inpatient treatment in another state, according to statements from his legal team.

Following a brief hearing, a judge ordered the musician to return to court on March 12, at which point a date for his preliminary hearing will be officially set.

Outside the courthouse, his attorney, Drew Findling, provided a positive update to waiting reporters. "As you can see, Montero is doing amazing, doing great, and we're super happy for him," Findling stated. The singer stood beside his lawyer, dressed in a brown jacket, khaki trousers, and brown cowboy boots. "We're just looking forward to a positive resolution in the case," Findling added.

The Charges and Potential Consequences

Lil Nas X has entered a plea of not guilty to four felony charges. The charges were filed after authorities alleged that he assaulted police officers who approached him in August in the Van Nuys area of Los Angeles, where he was reportedly walking nearly naked.

The specific charges he faces are:

  • Three counts of battery of a police officer
  • One count of resisting an officer

According to the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office, if convicted on all counts, the rapper faces a maximum sentence of up to five years in prison.

Background and Family Response

Lil Nas X is a celebrated musician, known for making history as the first openly gay man to receive a Country Music Association Award for his massive 2018 hit "Old Town Road." The track also earned him two Grammy awards.

In the immediate aftermath of the August arrest, the singer's father, Robert Stafford, spoke to the press. He indicated that his son was "very remorseful for what happened" and assured the public that "He's going to get the help that he needs." This statement aligns with the later revelation that the rapper was in a treatment facility, leading to his missed court date.

The case continues to develop, with the next significant step scheduled for March of the coming year.
