Detectives from the Police Service of Northern Ireland's Legacy Investigation Branch have arrested a man in connection with the 1973 murder of 18-year-old Marian Beattie. The suspect, who is aged in his 70s, was taken into custody on Thursday morning and remains in police custody.
Discovery of the Body
Marian Beattie's body was discovered at the bottom of a quarry near Aughnacloy, County Tyrone, on Saturday, March 31, 1973. She had attended a charity dance the previous night in the vicinity. The murder has remained unsolved for over five decades.
Fresh Appeal and Arrest
In March 2024, police issued a renewed appeal for information about the case. Following that appeal, detectives from the Legacy Investigation Branch made the arrest. A police spokesperson confirmed: "The suspect, who is aged in his 70s, was arrested this morning and remains in custody at present."
Ongoing Investigation
The arrest marks a significant development in one of Northern Ireland's longest-running unsolved murder cases. The Legacy Investigation Branch continues to examine historical crimes from the Troubles era and beyond. Further details about the suspect or the evidence leading to the arrest have not been disclosed.
The investigation remains active, and police have urged anyone with information to come forward.
