Two teenage girls have been charged following a disturbance at a supermarket in northwest Brisbane. Queensland Police responded to a call at the Keperra Woolworths, located in the Great Western Super Centre, on Friday at approximately 3pm.
A police spokesperson confirmed that the shop was evacuated and the two girls were taken into custody. On Saturday, authorities announced that both individuals had been charged in connection with the incident.
Details of the Charges
A 15-year-old girl from Kedron faces one count each of entering premises and committing an indictable offence (wilful damage), assault occasioning bodily harm, and two counts of common assault. Meanwhile, a 14-year-old girl from Goodna has been charged with one count each of entering premises and committing an indictable offence (wilful damage), assault occasioning bodily harm, and common assault.
Court Proceedings
The girls appeared at the Brisbane Children's Court on Saturday. During the hearing, Magistrate Tina Previtera ordered media representatives to leave the room. Melissa Bansraj, the lawyer representing the 14-year-old, argued that reporting details would be inappropriate. The court heard that her client has multiple vulnerabilities, including intellectual disabilities.
Bansraj stated, "Any reporting of (the 14-year-old) or her sister in relation to her identity and her breakdown in relationship with Child Safety might hinder the services and support that she receives from Child Safety." Magistrate Previtera approved the submission, citing the girl's age and specific difficulties.
The 15-year-old's case was mentioned earlier in the proceedings. Her duty lawyer, Lana Millar, informed the court that her client has other charges listed for mention on Wednesday. A tailored conditional bail program is being prepared for the application. The 15-year-old was remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear via video on Wednesday.
