Tragic Murder-Suicide in Connecticut Claims Four Lives
In a devastating incident that has shocked a quiet Connecticut community, a man shot his girlfriend and their two young children dead before turning the gun on himself at their family home. The apparent murder-suicide occurred in Plainville, Hartford County, on Friday afternoon, leaving the neighborhood reeling.
Victims Identified as Family of Four
The victims have been identified as Felisha Matthews, 31, and her two daughters: 12-year-old Mileena Matthews and four-year-old Ava King. Patrick King, 27, who was in a seven-year relationship with Matthews, admitted to killing his partner and their daughter during a phone call to his sister, according to Plainville police authorities.
Police Standoff Ends in Tragedy
SWAT officers descended on the couple's $335,000 home after King's sister called emergency services to report that her brother had shot his family and planned to take his own life. Police immediately began negotiations in an attempt to persuade King to exit the residence peacefully, but he refused to cooperate with authorities.
After approximately two hours of tense standoff, officers deployed drones and pepper gas into the home in an effort to gain entry. It was at this point that King shot himself in the head, according to official police statements. He was transported to a nearby hospital but later succumbed to his injuries.
Family Recently Settled in Community
The family were relatively new to the Plainville community, having just moved into the neighborhood in January of this year. Property records indicate King had recently purchased the three-bedroom, two-bathroom house. Investigators confirmed there were no prior police calls to the residence, and the weapon used in the shooting was legally registered to King, who possessed a permit to carry.
Picture-Perfect Family Image Shattered
Outwardly, King and Matthews appeared to be an ideal family unit. The couple had celebrated their seventh anniversary just last August, having met in an AutoZone store where King reportedly "chased" Matthews with "confidence," as she recalled in a heartfelt Facebook post marking the milestone.
"We've built a life full of love, chaos, growth, and so many second chances," Matthews wrote in the emotional post. "We've stumbled, rebuilt, fought, forgiven, and outgrown old versions of ourselves. We learned the hard way and still chose each other every time."
She acknowledged that neither partner was perfect but described their love as "real, rare, and ours," concluding with: "Here's to year seven, and everything we've survived, learned, and healed along the way. I love you, babe. Always have, always will."
Community Mourns and Seeks Answers
Mileena Matthews, who was Matthews' daughter from a prior relationship, attended the Middle School of Plainville. A fellow student alleged that the 12-year-old was frequently absent from school, missing classes "like two or three times a week."
Plainville council chair Christopher Wazorko expressed profound sorrow during a press briefing, stating: "In the wake of this unimaginable tragedy, our hearts go out to the families, friends and everyone in this community who is grieving and searching for answers. The loss of life is deeply painful for this close-knit community; we stand together in sorrow and compassion for all affected."
The local middle school will have support resources available on Monday for students impacted by the tragedy. The investigation remains ongoing, with police stating there is currently no information about the motive behind the killings.
