Chilling home security footage has emerged, documenting the terrifying moment a Georgia residence filled with thick black smoke, compelling a family to run for their lives. Haylie Cooler and her family were inside their Rincon home, approximately 35 minutes outside Savannah, shortly before midnight on February 16 when a sudden explosion triggered an intense, dark cloud of smoke to rapidly fill the room.
The Dramatic Footage of the Incident
The eerie video clip showed Cooler's 73-year-old step-father moments before the inferno, sitting calmly in the living room across from another chair occupied by a giant decorative skeleton as a television played in the background. Within seconds, a large flash of light and a massive bang were heard as the corner of the room illuminated, prompting Cooler and her family to scream in sheer terror.
A Panicked Escape Amidst the Chaos
Someone was then seen rushing into another room, yelling at others about the fire, while Cooler's step-father, who suffers from dementia, seemingly did not comprehend the imminent danger unfolding around him. The room quickly began to darken with smoke as the family ran and screamed, grabbing the elderly man as they urgently rushed outside to safety.
'Get out! Get out! Call 911!' a woman was heard panicking as she pulled the man from the home. The home's fire alarm then started beeping incessantly as she shouted: 'Get the cat! Get out!' The footage chillingly captured the dark plume of smoke engulfing the living room, with Cooler's step-father seen standing up and heading out the door as the skeleton remained seated across from him in the smoke-filled space.
Aftermath and Family Struggles
The fire left Cooler's home, which she shared with her step-dad and autistic son, completely destroyed, as she detailed on a GoFundMe page. Fortunately, Cooler, her family, and their dogs were not injured in the blaze. Sadly, their cats went missing after the fire, and Cooler later shared that they 'physically found 1 cat deceased in [the] home.' She added, 'The other cat is probably deceased inside as well.'
Compounding Health and Financial Hardships
Beyond the ashes of their home, the family has been grappling with several severe health issues and setbacks. Cooler, who serves as the primary caregiver for her step-father, noted that her son is autistic, epileptic, and has type two diabetes. She also recently learned she has a lytic lesion located on the frontal lobe of her brain—a spot of bone destruction indicating low bone density.
Cooler further explained that she suffers from 'severe depression and several other health conditions.' Prior to the devastating fire, she and her family were relying on a rental car because their vehicle had been in the shop for months. They were attempting to save for a new car, but now those funds must be redirected toward securing temporary housing while they work on rebuilding their home.
Community Support and Unanswered Questions
'We are reaching out to our community for help because we cannot do this alone. Any support, no matter how small, would mean the world to us as we try to rebuild our lives after this tragedy,' Cooler emphasized. By Thursday afternoon, nearly $7,000 had been raised to assist the family, and Cooler shared heartbreaking photos of the hollowed and burnt structure post-blaze.
It remains unclear how exactly the fire started or what exploded before the smoke overwhelmed the residence. The Daily Mail contacted the Rincon Fire Department and the Rincon Police Department for comment, but details on the cause are still pending. The incident underscores the sudden and catastrophic nature of house fires, leaving families to pick up the pieces amidst profound loss and ongoing challenges.
