Katie Knowles Speaks Out on Paternal Rape and Women's Safety
Katie Knowles has expressed feeling 'amazed and overwhelmed' by the outpouring of support following her courageous revelation that she was raped by her father for 'years and years'. The 35-year-old, who married television presenter Nick Knowles, 63, last year, broke her silence on Saturday in a video addressing women's safety, bravely detailing the sexual abuse she endured during her childhood.
A History of Silence and Shame
Previously, Katie had never spoken publicly about the abuse, only hinting at a 'difficult' relationship with her father, who passed away when she was 18. In a follow-up video posted on Sunday, she thanked those who reached out after her initial disclosure. 'I was a little bit amazed and overwhelmed by the response I had to my video yesterday,' she said. 'Men openly condemning these other men, which is a good start. The amount of women saying me too and sharing their stories was sad, but of those women, the amount that said how much they appreciated me speaking about my experiences was the silver lining.'
Katie emphasised that silence and shame are the abuser's power, urging others to speak out. She reflected on additional instances of harassment, such as being stalked on social media by a man who saw her in school uniform, noting these are not isolated incidents. 'These are not isolated incidents, and I could list 100 more. But so could every other woman I've spoken to about it,' she stated, listing unwanted touching, verbal harassment, sexual abuse, being followed, and domestic violence as pervasive issues.
Personal Trauma and Broader Concerns
In her first video, Katie shared the raw details of her abuse while sitting in her car. 'I have never spoken about this publicly, other than to friends, family and even then not everyone. I was raped by my dad for years, years and years,' she revealed. She acknowledged undergoing extensive therapy to cope, adding, 'It's not all men, but it is. It is men. It is men who commit the majority of domestic violence and sexual abuse.'
Her mood had recently dipped after reading a CNN exposé on a global online rape academy, where men share tactics for drugging and assaulting women. Katie described everyday fears, such as gripping her keys tightly while walking from the gym, despite wearing modest attire. 'We shouldn't have to worry anymore,' she lamented, highlighting the constant vigilance many women face.
Flood of Support and Personal Life
Katie was flooded with messages of support from followers, who praised her for raising awareness. She has two daughters from a previous relationship, while Nick has four children from three relationships. The couple met through their children and married in a lavish ceremony at Braxted Park, Essex, last summer. Katie joked about initially disliking Nick's extroverted nature but found common ground on a coffee date.
