Mother Faces Multiple Felony Charges After Horrific Discovery in Flint Home
Police in Flint, Michigan, have arrested and charged a mother after discovering her two special-needs children living in what officers described as a "house of horrors" filled with garbage and human waste.
Neighbor's Welfare Call Leads to Disturbing Scene
Krystal Farmer was taken into custody following a February 18 welfare check initiated by a concerned neighbor who contacted 911. When Flint Township Police Department officers arrived at the residence, they encountered conditions that shocked even experienced first responders.
Body camera footage revealed floors in every room were barely visible beneath months' worth of accumulated trash. The bathroom contained a sink that had overflowed, sending water cascading across the floor. Most disturbingly, feces were smeared along walls at a child's height, indicating little hands had been left without proper care or supervision.
Children Found in Desperate Circumstances
Officers discovered one child hiding around a corner in the hallway while the other was concealed in a bedroom. Both children were crying as police navigated through mountains of debris during their thorough search of the property.
"We got two kids, one completely naked and the other one's covered in [redacted]. Would you mind getting a couple of safety blankets so we can get them wrapped up in the cars?" an officer can be heard saying in body camera footage.
Police statements painted a heartbreaking picture of the children's attempts to survive. One child was found trying to eat raw, spoiled meat—not out of defiance but because, as authorities noted, "hunger cannot wait, and it does not understand neglect." The other child was discovered curled up on a bedroom floor, attempting to make themselves small in the absence of proper care.
Systematic Neglect and Evasion
Detectives determined the children had been left alone for multiple days without adequate supervision or provisions. The home contained no clean clothes folded on beds and no prepared food in the kitchen for the young children.
When police located Farmer, they reported she was evasive in her responses. "Officers refused to accept half-answers and detectives dismantled the mother's lies and followed the evidence until the truth came to light," the police department stated. "While her children endured filth, hunger, and fear, she prioritized herself over their safety, abandoning them to survive on their own."
Multiple Felony Charges Filed
On February 20, prosecutors charged Farmer with six felony counts including:
- Two counts of felony child abandonment
- Two counts of felony child abuse in the second degree
- Two counts of felony child abuse in the presence of another child
- One felony count of lying to a peace officer during a violent crime investigation

Flint Township Police Department emphasized the critical role community members play in protecting vulnerable individuals. "This story is also about hope. A neighbor spoke up," police stated.
