New Jersey Father Kills In-Laws and Estranged Wife in Murder-Suicide

A New Jersey father went on a deadly shooting rampage, killing his in-laws and the mother of his children before turning the gun on himself, according to police reports. The tragic incident occurred in Bayville, New Jersey, early Tuesday morning, leaving three young children orphaned and a community in mourning.

Police Response and Discovery of Victims

Officers with the Berkley Township Police Department responded to a home on Fairwood Drive around 5am Tuesday after receiving reports of shots fired. The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office confirmed that when the SWAT Team entered the residence, they found Allan Russell, 61, and his wife Michelle Russell, 60, deceased from apparent gunshot wounds.

Authorities then located three minor children inside the home who were unharmed before finding Vaughn Stewart, 37, dead from an apparent gunshot wound to his head. Officers searching the area around the home discovered bullet shell casings that led to the discovery of Deonna Stewart, Vaughn's estranged wife and the Russells's daughter. Her deceased body was located about 50 yards from the house.

Details of the Shooting

Investigators determined that Vaughn and Deonna, 38, were the parents of the three children found in the home and were living separately at the time of their deaths. Detectives said Vaughn entered the home and shot Allan, a Child Protective Services (CPS) employee, and Michelle before chasing Deonna down the street and firing multiple shots at her.

He then returned to the house and shot himself with the gun, according to police statements. The motive for this horrific quadruple murder-suicide remains unclear, leaving investigators and the community searching for answers.

Family Background and Tributes

Deonna and Vaughn's three young children are now in the care of the Department of Child Protection and Permanency, as confirmed by the prosecutor's office. Tributes have poured in online for the Russells and their daughter Deonna, who all lived together at the home according to public records.

The three victims were originally from Jamaica, according to friend Tanya Shannon, who shared heartfelt memories on social media. "My heart is so heavy. A beautiful soul, Deonna, was taken from this world far too soon at just 38 years old," she wrote alongside an image of the late mother.

Shannon added: "She leaves behind three precious children, including a baby who is only 2 months old. Her parents also lost their lives in this unimaginable tragedy. She was always kind, warm, and full of life. It's heartbreaking to think that someone so vibrant is gone."

Community Impact and Neighbor Reactions

Several of Allan's coworkers took to social media to express their grief after hearing of his passing. One wrote on Facebook: "In a highly stressful and often thankless position - you always handled yourself with integrity, grace, and humor! RIP Mr. Allan Russell and thank you for your devotion and dedication to our youth."

Another coworker, Quinn Gunderson, shared multiple images of Allan with friends and wrote: "Allan sat in the cubicle next to me at work. He became a close friend and I am honored to have known him. He would do ANYTHING for anyone and never asked for anything in return."

Neighbors described the Russells as friendly and welcoming people. James Casella, whose backyard backs up to the Russells's home, told local media: "They called me once every couple of weeks just to check in on us. My kids look out the back window just to see if they're out there, just to say 'hi' to them. It really hit us hard. They were truly great, great people."

Casella revealed that one of the bullets hit his home near the bedroom he shares with his wife, but thankfully did not strike the area where they sleep. Natalia Antonowski, another neighbor, immediately sheltered inside her home after hearing gunfire that morning. "You wouldn't really expect it to happen around here," she added, expressing the community's shock.

Support for the Family

A GoFundMe page has been launched to help raise money for Allan, Michelle and Deonna's funeral services. The page reads: "Allan and Michelle loved their children and grandchildren endlessly. Their faith in God was immeasurable. This horrific act of domestic violence took three precious lives."
