A husband's alleged campaign of coercive control, involving physical and sexual violence, led his wife to take her own life, a court has heard. Tarryn Baird, 34, died by hanging in November 2017, leaving a heartbreaking suicide note that expressed her inability to endure the abuse any longer.
Allegations of Sustained Abuse
Prosecutors at Winchester Crown Court claim that Christopher Trybus, 43, subjected Ms Baird to a "sustained" period of controlling and coercive behaviour during their marriage. This included threats of violence, sexual assaults, monitoring her movements, restricting financial access, and isolating her from family members.
Details of the Case
Tom Little KC, prosecuting, told the jury that Trybus engaged in "extensive and escalating controlling, coercive and manipulative behaviour," which included two charges of rape and other sexual assaults. The abuse occurred "behind closed doors" over a prolonged timeframe, ultimately contributing to Ms Baird's decision to end her life.
Mr Little explained that Trybus controlled many aspects of their relationship, even from abroad, using the "threat and fear of physical and sexual violence." This led to a deterioration in Ms Baird's mental health, and she felt trapped, unable to escape despite considering it multiple times.
The Tragic Suicide Note
In her suicide note, Ms Baird wrote: "To my family, I am so sorry but I just couldn't take it any more. I know you may not understand this but I just can't explain the dark cloud that is over me. Please don't let this break you but know I am now free. Nothing any of you could have done could have changed this, please just know that. I love you and please forgive me."
Background of the Couple
The couple, both originally from South Africa, moved to the UK in 2007 and married in 2009. Trybus, who works as a software consultant and developer, denies all charges, including manslaughter, controlling and coercive behaviour, and rape. The trial is ongoing, with the prosecution arguing that his actions legally caused Ms Baird's death.
This case highlights the severe impact of domestic abuse and coercive control, underscoring the need for awareness and support for victims in similar situations.
