Wife's World Shattered After Discovering Husband's Secret Sperm Donor Double Life
A mother-of-five has shared her devastating story of discovering her husband's secret double life as a sperm donor, revealing how a single discovery in their Edinburgh home unraveled two decades of marriage.
The Discovery That Changed Everything
Mary Thomson, whose name has been changed to protect her identity, believed she and her husband David lived a completely normal life until July 2025. While taking annual leave from her retail management job, Mary made a shocking discovery in her husband's wardrobe that would turn her world upside down.
"I found some kind of receptacle, a very substantial plastic thing with a screw top," Mary recalled. "There was also a file that said a name that wasn't his on it, and it had details of his donations inside."
When confronted, David couldn't deny the evidence. The file documented years of sperm donations made under false names through various Facebook groups dedicated to unregulated sperm donation.
A Secret Life Unfolds
According to Mary, her 45-year-old husband had been leading this double life for approximately six years, motivated by what she describes as a "pregnancy fetish" and an "insatiable libido." While Mary worked 12-hour shifts, David - who was unemployed - organized sperm deliveries to clients, including many lesbian couples.
"He had dozens of aliases online and different Facebook accounts," Mary revealed. "He was desperate for as many babies as he could possibly achieve. He also advertised for sex through natural insemination, which is having intercourse."
David would meet recipients in hotel rooms and even on the street, claiming not to have been paid for many donations. Mary believes he preferred younger women in their 20s and 30s and harbored particular fantasies about donating to "goth women."
The Emotional Fallout
The discovery sent Mary into emotional turmoil. She immediately traveled to stay with her daughter in Southampton, where she "didn't eat or sleep" for two weeks. When space ran out, she moved to a homeless shelter nearer to Edinburgh for another two weeks before ultimately returning to the home she shared with David.
"I'm still shattered. I feel a sense of extreme betrayal," Mary shared. "Things will never be the same. I wonder if he ever really loved me in the first place."
Despite the devastation, the couple continues to live together, though Mary admits she "can't accept him as my husband" anymore. She suspects their continued connection might be a trauma bond rather than genuine affection.
Conflicting Accounts and Uncertain Numbers
While David claims he "wasn't that successful" as a donor and believes he fathered "fewer than 10" children, Mary suspects the true number could be in the double digits. David, who has a son from a previous relationship, is now receiving treatment and undertaking a 12-step program for sex addiction.
Mary recently found a note in David's drawer that read, "I had a good run, and I got what I wanted," which she interprets as evidence of narcissistic impulses driving his behavior.
The Unregulated World of Online Sperm Donation
This case highlights the growing concerns about unregulated sperm donation through social media platforms. While fertility treatments are available through the NHS, not everyone qualifies, creating demand for unlicensed donors.
Mary describes the Facebook groups David frequented as a "subculture where everything is made to seem normal," with many donors motivated by personal gratification rather than altruism.
"I think he has a narcissistic element to his personality around wanting to be a winner all the time, admiration, self-gratification," Mary reflected. "He wanted to install himself into young people's lives. He wants the children to contact him so he can be the central figure."
Before the revelations, Mary says they had a "normal life" with no fighting or tumultuous arguments, making the discovery all the more shocking. The couple, who met at work nearly 25 years ago, now navigate a marriage fundamentally changed by secrets and betrayal.
