Hiker's Haunting Final Text to Wife Before Vanishing Revealed

Grant Gardner, an experienced hiker and married father of two, vanished during a solo trek in Wyoming's Bighorn National Forest. His last message to his wife, sent on July 29, 2025, said he had reached the summit but was 'fatigued' after a 'more taxing than expected' climb. He never returned, and a massive search ensued.

The 38-year-old set off on July 20 for a three-day hike aiming to exceed 13,000 feet. When he failed to return, authorities launched a full-scale operation involving six counties, the Wyoming Army National Guard, canine units, drones, and private pilots. Despite extensive efforts, no trace was found for weeks.

On August 5, Sheriff Ken Blackburn noted the peak's dangers: 'lack of visible trails through cliffs, timberline, boulder fields, and other hazards.' After 20 days, the search was suspended on August 20, with officials stating 'the most optimistic survival odds have run out.'

Six days later, a professional climbing team discovered Gardner's rucksack under a ledge, and his body was found on August 27. The coroner ruled his death a 'tragic accident' during the solo ascent. His wife treasured his final words, which brought some closure after the harrowing ordeal.
