Nationwide Cashier Stole Thousands from Vulnerable Customers to Fund Lavish Holidays

A Nationwide cashier who stole thousands of pounds from vulnerable customers was unmasked by colleagues after posting pictures of her extravagant holidays on social media, a court has heard. Kelly Kershaw, 54, from Nefyn in north Wales, earned just £1,400 per month working as a cashier for the building society, but frequently boasted about her luxurious trips on Facebook.

Lavish Lifestyle Funded by Fraud

Kershaw's social media page showcased her "living and loving life one adventure at a time," with images of her sailing, skiing, and embarking on an African safari. Her travels included destinations such as Dubai, the Maldives, Indonesia, Paris, Tuscany, the Greek islands for a Mamma Mia-inspired trip, Mexico, and Norway. Prosecutors revealed that between 2023 and 2024, she stole from three of the "most vulnerable" customers at the Caernarfon branch in mid-Wales, where she had worked for 18 years as a trusted staff member.

Internal Investigation and Charges

In October 2024, an internal investigation was launched after suspicions arose about Kershaw's lifestyle. Staff noted she was embarking on "numerous" expensive holidays and appeared to be "living beyond her means." The investigation uncovered that she had forged customer signatures and processed cash withdrawals without consent. The victims included a 49-year-old man with learning difficulties, an 85-year-old stroke victim, and three other pensioners. Nationwide has since paid out £8,630 in compensation to the affected customers.

Court Proceedings and Defense

Kershaw admitted to five counts of fraud from 2023 to 2024. In her defense, she claimed to have a "compulsive shopping addiction," gave money to beggars, and paid household bills, but acknowledged using stolen funds for holidays, including trips to the Caribbean. Her defense lawyer, Michael Strain, stated that Kershaw moved to a small community before developing an illness and "genuinely" does not know why she behaved this way. He added that she has lost her job, reputation, and good name, and is now working for a cleaning business.

Sentencing and Reactions

The probation service described Kershaw's offences as "despicable," while Magistrate Sue Wynn-Jones emphasized that her victims were "particularly vulnerable." Kershaw is scheduled to be sentenced on May 8 at Caernarfon Crown Court. A Nationwide spokesperson commented, "We are unable to comment on any ongoing criminal proceedings as they are a matter for the court. We can confirm the individual's employment ended in November 2024."
