Australian Police Seize 100,000 Illegal Cockroaches

Australian authorities have seized over 100,000 live cockroaches from a single breeder, marking the country's largest-ever confiscation of exotic invertebrates. The haul, valued at 200,000 Australian dollars, included Madagascar hissing cockroaches and dubia cockroaches, both illegal to possess in Australia.

Details of the Seizure

The operation took place in May 2026 in Bathurst, New South Wales, according to Australia's Department of Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Water. The cockroaches were being kept by a commercial breeder, who will not face charges, though officials warned of potential prosecutions for those caught with such invertebrates.

Why Are These Cockroaches Illegal?

Both Madagascar hissing and dubia cockroaches are prohibited from importation into Australia. They cannot be legally kept, bred, or sold under any circumstances. The department stated that exotic cockroaches have not undergone environmental risk assessments and could spread diseases or harm native wildlife.

Madagascar hissing cockroaches are among the world's largest, measuring two to three inches in length. In comparison, the common Australian cockroach is only 0.9 to 1.4 inches. Australia's subtropical climate already supports hundreds of native cockroach species.

Use as Reptile Food

Bathurst snake catcher Stefanie Lesser told the Australian Broadcasting Corp. that the larger exotic species were likely being sold as cost-effective reptile food, as fewer insects are needed due to their size. Officials urged pet owners to use crickets or wood roaches instead.

Australia maintains strict biosecurity controls at its borders to protect agriculture, horticulture, and native wildlife from pest infestations. Smugglers face fines of thousands of dollars for bringing in undeclared or illegal animal, insect, or plant material.

The seized cockroaches will be euthanized, the department confirmed.
