Police in Scotland have launched a major investigation following the discovery of a man's body on a path near a supermarket in North Lanarkshire.
Body Discovered on Sunday Morning
The body of a 51-year-old man was found close to the Tesco Extra store in Coatbridge. The alarm was raised at 7.30am on Sunday, 11 January 2026.
Officers were called to the scene, which is understood to be a cycle path adjacent to the retail park. The area was immediately cordoned off as a forensic examination began.
Extensive Police Enquiries Underway
Police Scotland confirmed they are treating the death as unexplained and are conducting what they describe as "extensive" enquiries to establish the full circumstances.
A significant police presence remained at the location throughout Sunday as detectives and specialist officers worked at the scene. The identity of the man has not yet been formally released, pending notification of his next of kin.
Community Reaction and Ongoing Probe
The discovery has sent shockwaves through the local community in Coatbridge. The path where the body was found is used by pedestrians and cyclists, particularly those accessing the large Tesco Extra store.
Police are urging anyone with information, or who may have been in the area around the time of the discovery, to come forward. They are also likely to be reviewing any available CCTV footage from the supermarket and surrounding businesses.
This remains a live and active investigation. Police have not indicated any suspicion of foul play at this early stage but are working to piece together the events leading to the man's death.
