Shocking footage has emerged showing the moment a small plane crashed into a restaurant in Brazil, killing all four people on board in a devastating blaze. The tragic accident occurred just after 10:30am local time yesterday morning in Capao da Canoa, located in the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul.

Fatalities and Narrow Escape

The victims have been identified as Luis Ortolani and his wife Deborah, who was the mother to triplets from a previous relationship, along with pilot Nelio Pessanha and aviation company partner Renan Saes. All four individuals perished when the Piper Malibu aircraft they were traveling in crashed moments after taking off from Capao da Canoa Airport.

In a fortunate twist of fate, the restaurant was closed at the time of the accident because the owner had decided to shut briefly for renovation work. Restaurant owner Douglas Roos revealed that more than ten people could have been inside during normal operating hours, potentially leading to a far higher death toll.

Dramatic Footage and Witness Accounts

Astonishing footage of the crash shows a man on foot running for his life as the plane came down, with another couple sprinting away from the scene as they too came dangerously close to being hit. The video captures flames leaping from the top of the building and a black plume of smoke rising high into the air following the impact.

Witnesses reported that the plane had collided with a pole near the end of the runway before crashing into the restaurant. Lorry driver Silvio Silva de Jesus, who witnessed the crash, told Brazilian media: "I saw that the airplane was coming from the airport after take-off. It climbed but didn't manage to climb fully and seemed to lose power. There was a noise coming from the engine. It almost hit the office, then a pole, got caught on the pole and went down nose-first before the explosion."

Emergency Response and Evacuation

Locals living in houses near to the restaurant were immediately evacuated to safety by emergency responders. Civil Defence spokesman Sabrina Rimas confirmed: "We managed to immediately evacuate the people from the properties next door, so all the residents left without injuries. This aircraft crashed into a restaurant that was closed, and next to it we have a shop that was also closed. Firefighters were mobilised immediately and the first teams arrived shortly afterwards to tackle the blaze."

Rio Grande do Sul state governor Eduardo Leite said on social media platform X: "I have been following, since the very first moments, together with the security forces, the full mobilisation in responding to the incident involving the crash of a small aircraft in Capao da Canoa, unfortunately with confirmed fatalities. The accident area has already been evacuated by Civil Defence."

Investigation and Aftermath

The Military Brigade secured the area for the safety of passers-by following the crash. Power supply in the area was cut off, with overhead electricity cables reported to be damaged by the impact. Although officials initially suggested the plane had come from Sao Paulo, it was subsequently confirmed that the aircraft had been departing from Capao da Canoa Airport at the time of the accident.

The investigation into the precise cause of the crash continues, with aviation authorities examining all factors that may have contributed to this tragic incident that claimed four lives in southern Brazil.
