A murder investigation has been launched following the death of a 25-year-old man in a drive-by shooting at a barbecue in south London over the weekend. The victim has been identified as Keanu Taylor, who succumbed to his injuries in hospital after the attack in Coldharbour Lane, Brixton, shortly after 1am on Saturday.
Four people were injured when shots were fired from a vehicle. The Metropolitan Police confirmed that three other victims, aged 21, 47, and 70, sustained injuries that are not life-threatening or life-changing. No arrests have been made thus far.
Detective Chief Inspector Allam Bhangoo, leading the investigation, said: “As we work quickly to identify those responsible, our thoughts are with Keanu’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time. This was a shocking act of violence which has had a devastating impact on those involved and the local community. I want to reassure residents that we are working urgently to identify and apprehend those responsible.”
He added: “It is vital that anyone who saw what happened, or has any information or footage, comes forward. Even the smallest detail could prove crucial to our investigation. Local residents will continue to see an increased police presence in the area over the coming days. If you have any concerns, please speak to officers.”
In the aftermath of the attack, police officers were seen searching an area of grass outside the Southwyck House estate on Coldharbour Lane. Specialist crime officers and the London Ambulance Service provided emergency first aid at the scene.
Moh John, 45, who works at the Payless Food & Wine supermarket near the estate, said he believed the incident occurred during a barbecue party. “I was putting something there and I heard the noises. It was busy, there was a party. I saw the people run away. But then I saw the people, some people try to come in the shop and I locked the door.” He described those rushing into the supermarket as “scared” and said he kept the door locked for a period before reopening.
Another local resident, Robert, 40, who did not give his surname, said he was inside all night and did not witness the incident. He commented: “I think it happened at the barbecue. It was packed. I usually feel safe around here, people know each other and get on. There’s been a few stabbings, and one day one gun was caught, but I don’t think anyone’s ever been shot like this.”
Police are appealing for anyone with information or footage to come forward as the investigation continues.
