In the latest episode of Coronation Street, Carl Webster faced a life-threatening encounter as Ronnie Bailey appeared to exact deadly revenge for his latest malicious act. The villain, who had been involved in a series of nefarious deeds including an affair with his brother's wife, car theft, a hit-and-run, and blackmailing his dementia-stricken mother, decided to sabotage his brother Kevin Webster's garage. While tampering with a car, Carl loosened screws underneath the vehicle, laughing and muttering, "Oh Kev, the car's going to need an MOT." However, an unknown figure approached and caused the car to crash down on Carl, crushing him.
The Aftermath of the Attack
Carl gasped for air as he was trapped under the weight of the car. His fate remained uncertain until he was seen in the back of Ronnie's van. Despite Carl pleading for medical help, Ronnie responded, "It's not often you get a second chance. I don't make the same mistake twice," and drove off, leaving Carl's survival in question.
Fan Theories and Clues
Fans have been quick to analyze the events, particularly focusing on a fireworks clue. In a flashforward episode, Betsy Swain discovers a body after hearing fireworks. Since Carl was injured after the fireworks were heard in his episode, some fans believe he may not be the victim. One fan noted, "We know the scream came just shortly after the fireworks. So, we know that Carl was looking out the garage door when the fireworks began, and had time to get back under the car, which came down upon him, and Ronnie had time to load Carl into the car." Another added, "So it looks like Ronnie made the car drop on Carl then. But he chose to save him last minute, which I think implies that Carl isn't our victim and lives the week."
Actor's Hints on Carl's Future
Jonathan Howard, who plays Carl, hinted at possible directions for his character. Speaking exclusively to The Mirror, he said, "If Carl survives, I think everything he is gonna go through this week will be life-changing for him. If he dies, the Websters, or most of them, are gonna be mixed emotions. If he survives, then hopefully he has the chance to redeem himself a little bit." He added, "As long as he can still be an annoying little brat. If he didn't lose that, I'd be happy to have a bit of humility." On a possible exit, he expressed gratitude for his time on the show, saying, "I'd be very grateful for the time I have had here. I feel very lucky to play the part I've done. He is so much fun to play."
Coronation Street airs weeknights at 8:30pm on ITV1 and ITV X.
