An American Carnival Cruise passenger has tragically died after losing control of her mobility scooter and driving off the edge of a pier in the Bahamas. The 88-year-old woman, who has not been named, plunged into the ocean near the newly opened private resort of Celebration Key around noon on Saturday, according to officials.
Incident Details
Carnival Cruise confirmed that the ship she had been traveling on, the Carnival Celebration, was docked nearby at the time of the accident. Staff members rushed to assist but were unable to save her. 'Carnival teams responded, successfully retrieving her from the water,' the Florida-based operator stated. 'Despite resuscitation efforts, she did not survive.'
The Royal Bahamas Police Force reported that initial investigations indicate the woman struck her head against the hull of the Carnival Celebration before falling into the sea.
Witness Accounts
Passenger Edward Egersheim told local media that he believes the woman suffered a heart attack moments before the fall. 'She had a heart attack, went off with the scooter, and banged her head pretty bad,' he said. He added that her husband also tried to save her but injured himself in the process.
Another passenger, Linsy Egersheim, expressed the somber mood: 'It's vacation, you don't expect bad things to happen, but definitely getting back on the boat was really sad. We walked past the scooter and all you could think about is that poor lady.'
Celebration Key Resort
Celebration Key, where the accident occurred, is a Grand Bahama luxury resort that opened on July 19, 2025. The $600 million, 68-acre private destination features blue lagoons, a 10-story sandcastle attraction with a water slide and swim-up bar, and several beaches. Described on the Carnival Cruise website as 'your key to paradise,' the resort has now been marred by three unnatural deaths, including the separate drownings of a 79-year-old man and a 74-year-old woman last year, according to Fox News.
About the Carnival Celebration
The Carnival Celebration, one of the largest vessels in the Carnival Cruise Line fleet, has 20 decks and can accommodate 6,500 guests and about 1,700 crew members. It features a rollercoaster called Bolt in the 'Ultimate Playground' zone on the top deck. The ship sets sail from Miami, Florida, offering six- to eight-day cruises to various parts of the Caribbean.
The official cause of death is still pending investigation, and the woman's identity has not been released.
