Driver Pleads Guilty in Fatal Crash That Killed Young Couple

A motorist has admitted responsibility for a devastating collision that resulted in the tragic deaths of a young couple from west Wales. Alexander MacCallum, aged 28, pleaded guilty to two charges of causing death by careless driving at Swansea Crown Court on Monday, February 9.

Details of the Fatal Incident

The fatal crash occurred on the afternoon of June 13, 2024, on the A477 between Llanddowror and Red Roses in Carmarthenshire. Adam Muskett, 27, and Katie Worrell, 25, both from Tenby, were traveling in a Ford Fiesta when their vehicle was struck by a Jaguar XKR driven by MacCallum.

Emergency services, including police officers, fire crews, paramedics, and the Wales Air Ambulance, rushed to the scene. Despite their efforts, both Mr Muskett and Miss Worrell succumbed to their injuries at the location of the collision.

Court Proceedings and Sentencing

During the hearing before Judge Huw Rees, the court heard that MacCallum accepted full responsibility for the offences. The prosecution stated that his vehicle veered into the oncoming carriageway due to a momentary loss of control, which was exacerbated by poor weather conditions at the time.

MacCallum, of Beach Road, Llanreath, Pembroke Dock, has no prior criminal convictions. Judge Rees has ordered a pre-sentence report and scheduled the sentencing for April 2. The defendant has been notified that he faces an immediate driving ban until the sentencing hearing takes place.

Heartbreaking Tributes from Families

Following the tragedy, the families of both victims shared emotional tributes that highlighted the profound loss they have experienced.

Adam Muskett's family described him as a loving son, brother, grandson, and nephew who cherished life deeply. They said: "Adam loved life, his friends, Tenby, football and Katie very much. How do we move on without you, your big kind heart and cheeky smile? We are heartbroken and forever proud."

Katie Worrell's family remembered her as a vibrant and accomplished young woman. They stated: "Katie was a much-loved daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece and cousin. She lived life to the full, loving to travel and achieving so much in such a short time—she graduated with a Masters and worked hard. She loved her friends and Adam beyond words. Katie was kind, caring and beautiful and our lives will never be the same without her."

The case has drawn significant attention in the local community, underscoring the devastating consequences of careless driving. The court will reconvene in April to determine the appropriate sentence for MacCallum, while the families continue to grieve the irreplaceable loss of their loved ones.
