Scenes of jubilation turned violent on London's Edgware Road on Friday night as Egypt football fans celebrated the country's World Cup last-32 victory against Australia. A 41-year-old man was taken to hospital with a suspected broken arm after being hit by a car amidst the chaos.
Celebrations Descend into Disorder
Hundreds of supporters waving Egyptian flags and chanting spilled onto the busy road following the match. Social media footage showed fans clambering onto vehicles, including a double-decker bus, as police attempted to disperse the crowd. Tensions escalated when officers clashed with some fans.
One video captured a car driving through the crowd before colliding with a man, leaving him on the ground. The Metropolitan Police confirmed the victim sustained a broken arm.
Police Response and Investigation
Police were called at 21:57hrs on Friday, 3 July to reports of disorder on Edgware Road. Approximately 1,000 people were gathered in the road. A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said: “A 41-year-old man who was involved in a collision with a car was taken to hospital for treatment of a suspected broken arm.”
“The group was safely dispersed and no arrests were made at the scene. Enquiries are ongoing including examining CCTV to identify any offences. Please call 101 with the reference 8981/03JUL if you were a witness.”
