Former Deliveroo Driver Appears in Court on Child Sexual Assault Charge
A 27-year-old former Deliveroo driver has been charged with the sexual assault of an eight-year-old girl in north Dublin. The accused, whose identity is protected under Irish court restrictions for sexual assault cases, appeared before Judge Michele Finan at Dublin District Court on Wednesday.
Arrest and Court Proceedings
The man was arrested on Tuesday in connection with the alleged incident, which is said to have occurred on February 15. Garda Grainne Raggett informed the court that the defendant denies the charge against him. She noted that he followed the proceedings through an interpreter.
Garda Raggett provided details of the investigation, stating that Deliveroo had supplied dates and timestamps related to the accused's location on the day of the alleged assault. A search warrant was executed on Tuesday, leading to the seizure of several items, including his Deliveroo jacket and bag, waterproof trousers, mobile phone, passport, and driving licence.
Background and Immigration Status
The court heard that the accused arrived in Ireland via the United Kingdom two years ago and currently lacks valid immigration status in the country. He had been employed by Deliveroo but left his position approximately two weeks ago. Garda Raggett emphasised that he had worked for two years and, according to his legal representation, had "made his life here in Ireland."
Legal Arguments and Bail Decision
Defence barrister Ciara Murray stated that the accused maintains his innocence, asserting, "he said he did not do what he is alleged to have done." Despite this, Judge Finan described Garda Raggett's argument as "very comprehensive and cogent" and subsequently refused bail.
The judge also highlighted that gardai are investigating two other alleged incidents, suggesting that further charges may be forthcoming. The accused was granted legal aid and remanded in custody at Cloverhill Prison. His next court appearance is scheduled for March 18, where the case will continue to unfold.
