Four men have been arrested by Humberside Police following a serious hit-and-run incident in Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire, which has left a pedestrian fighting for his life. The collision occurred on Monday night on East Common Lane, where a 50-year-old man sustained life-threatening injuries after being struck by a vehicle.
Police Swiftly Track Down Suspects After Fleeing Scene
The driver and a passenger reportedly fled the scene immediately after the collision, abandoning the van. However, police officers from the Roads Policing Unit acted quickly, spotting a van believed to be involved on Rochdale Road a short time later. The vehicle was brought to a stop, leading to a brief foot chase during which the two men who fled were detained.
Upon searching the van, officers located and detained two additional men who were in the back of the vehicle. All four individuals have been arrested in connection with the investigation and remain in police custody at this time. The arrested men are aged 33, 35, 45, and 53.
Victim in Critical Condition as Investigation Continues
The injured pedestrian was immediately taken to hospital for emergency treatment, where he remains in a life-threatening condition. A police spokesperson confirmed that officers were deployed rapidly to the scene to secure the area and initiate the investigation.
Detective Inspector Charmian Bakersmith addressed the local community, stating, "Understandably, the nature of this incident will be concerning to the local community; however, I want to offer my reassurance that we have already made extensive enquiries to establish the circumstances and ascertain exactly what has happened."
Appeal for Witnesses and Information
While the investigation is still in its early stages, initial lines of enquiry suggest that the individuals involved may have known each other. A scene guard remains in place on East Common Lane as officers continue their work.
Detective Inspector Bakersmith has issued a public appeal for information: "I would appeal to anyone who has any information that may assist with our enquiries, or anyone who has dashcam or CCTV footage of the area around the time of the collision to contact us on our non-emergency number 101 quoting crime reference 26*8391."
Alternatively, information can be reported anonymously via the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
