GP Receives Four-Month Custodial Sentence for Sexual Assaults on Female Patients
A general practitioner who sexually assaulted two female patients during medical consultations, including one incident in front of her toddler, will spend only four months behind bars despite a longer sentence. John Norman Parker, a 68-year-old retired doctor, pleaded guilty to five counts of sexual assault related to attacks on two women in 2024 at his practice in Cleveland, approximately 30 kilometres from Brisbane's central business district.
Court Details of the Assaults and Victim Impact Statements
In Brisbane Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, Parker was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment, but the magistrate ordered that he serve just four months in custody. The court heard disturbing details of the assaults, where Parker rubbed his groin against both women, touched them inappropriately, and told one victim he wished to see her in a bikini. Magistrate Belinda Merrin condemned Parker's actions, stating he had made his female victims "feel powerless in [his] pursuit of sexual gratification."
One of the women described how Parker assaulted her in front of her young daughter, forcing her to protect the child's innocence while managing her own terror. In an emotional victim impact statement, she said, "Since the assault, my life has been dominated by fear, anxiety, and traumatic stress. The effect of his actions made me feel dehumanised like an object rather than a patient deserving of safety and respect." She added that she has hidden the trauma from her daughters to prevent them from viewing male professionals as inherently dangerous.
The second victim recounted how Parker assaulted her as she attempted to leave the consultation room. She told the court, "In a short 10-minute interval of my entire life, you destroyed the trust in me as a person. When I did manage to open the door, you just stood back with a smile on your face and said 'Have a good day'. I was vulnerable when I came to you for help… I still feel ashamed that I didn't do anything."
Legal Proceedings and Character References
Initially, Parker denied the assaults to police, claiming he had "too much respect" for women, but later changed his story. His lawyer argued for a non-custodial sentence, proposing that Parker pay each victim $1,500 and serve probation, describing the offending as "low level." However, Magistrate Merrin strongly criticised this characterisation, stating, "There might be a lack of aggravating features, but can we just not use those particular descriptors, please? I find them very unhelpful."
The court also heard that Parker's wife and daughter submitted glowing character references in his support. Additionally, an online post from Cleveland Medical in April 2024, which has since been removed, praised Parker for his "general passion in health and wellness that brings his patients back time and time again" and noted his interests in golf, family time, and humour.
This case highlights significant concerns about patient safety and trust in medical professionals, with the victims' statements underscoring the lasting psychological impact of such assaults. The sentencing decision has sparked discussions about the adequacy of penalties for sexual offences in healthcare settings.
