A Greek boat operator has been sentenced to four years in prison following a tragic parasailing accident that claimed the lives of two British teenagers during a storm in Rhodes, Greece. Nikos Mallios, aged 57, was found guilty of severe health and safety violations that directly resulted in the deaths of 15-year-old Jessica Hayes and 13-year-old Mike Connelly, known affectionately as Mikey, in 2020.
Court Conviction and Sentencing
A three-member panel at the Misdemeanour Court of Rhodes delivered the verdict on Friday, convicting Mallios of breaching health and safety laws. The court determined that his negligence led to the fatal incident, where the rope securing the parachute to the vessel snapped in high winds, sending the teenagers crashing into rocks from a height of 400 feet. Despite the four-year prison sentence, Mallios was temporarily released after indicating his intention to appeal the decision.
Families' Reaction to the Verdict
Jessica's father, Tony Hayes, expressed mixed emotions, stating that the conviction represents 'the first step on the journey to justice... One that Jess and Mikey will look down on and be proud'. He acknowledged the positive step but emphasized that the fight continues, with plans to pursue further charges in a higher court. Mr. Hayes highlighted the ongoing pain, noting that the sentence does not alleviate the loss or change the fact that their lives have been irrevocably altered.
The family's lawyer, George Moschos, commented that the sentence appropriately reflects the scale and seriousness of Mallios' failings. In court, Mallios offered an apology to the families but maintained his innocence, denying any wrongdoing and attempting to justify his actions, including operating in bad weather and violating rules against triple-seat parasailing and carrying children under 14.
Details of the Tragic Accident
The incident occurred during a holiday trip to Rhodes in 2020, where the Hayes and Connelly families were celebrating a surprise 65th birthday. The three teenagers—Jessica, Mikey, and Mikey's older brother James, then aged 15—had been enjoying what Jessica described as the 'best holiday she'd ever had' just days before the accident. Their parents booked the parasailing excursion through Mallios' Lindos Watersport Centre, which was featured on their hotel's website.
After setting off at 12:30 PM, a sudden storm erupted, causing chaotic conditions. Eyewitnesses described the speedboat desperately trying to catch up with the trio after the rope snapped, with the parachute veering uncontrollably toward the rocky coastline. The teenagers fell from 400 feet onto a remote, rocky area, resulting in fatal injuries for Jessica and Mikey. James miraculously survived but spent two weeks in a coma, suffering broken legs and severe head and spinal injuries.
Rescue Efforts and Aftermath
Rescue crews faced significant challenges reaching the remote location, taking several hours to arrive. James's mother, Sharon Connelly, aged 47, fainted upon seeing the extensive damage to her son's face in the hospital. The tragedy has left both families devastated, with Mr. Hayes stating, 'Losing a child is the worst thing that can happen'.
Despite the accident, Mallios has continued to operate his watersports company, according to reports. The case is set to proceed to a higher court in Kos later this year, where Mallios will face more serious charges of manslaughter and grievous bodily harm. The families remain determined to seek further justice, hoping for a longer sentence and accountability for the preventable loss of their children.
