BBC Breakfast's Jon Kay shares tragic sea rescue deaths as search continues
Heartbreaking sea tragedy claims two lives in East Yorkshire

BBC Breakfast presenter Jon Kay delivered heartbreaking news to viewers on Tuesday morning, detailing a tragic sea incident in East Yorkshire that has claimed two lives with a third person still missing.

A Desperate Rescue Attempt Turns Fatal

On Friday, January 2, a family outing at Withernsea turned to disaster. Sarah Keeling, 45, from Nottinghamshire, entered the water after her 15-year-old daughter, Grace, was swept away by a large wave. Seeing their plight, 67-year-old Mark Ratcliffe also entered the sea in a brave attempt to help.

Humberside Police confirmed that the bodies of Sarah Keeling and Mark Ratcliffe were recovered on Friday evening. An extensive search operation involving multiple emergency services continues for teenager Grace Keeling.

Emotional Tributes to 'A Shining Light'

During the BBC Breakfast segment, a pre-recorded interview featured Sarah's close friend, Joanne Gee, who gave an emotional tribute. "She was just the kind of person that leaves a mark with absolutely everyone that meets her," Joanne said, struggling to contain her tears.

She described Sarah as someone who "took every opportunity to be happy" and a devoted mother. "Sarah adored Grace, she was her whole world," Joanne added. "To find out she was only inches away from her, but obviously mother nature was stronger."

Ongoing Search and Family Statements

Since the incident, the coastline has been extensively searched. Fire service drones have been deployed and police are scouring sea defences in the ongoing effort to locate Grace.

The family of Mark Ratcliffe released a moving statement, calling him a "loving husband, father, son, brother and the best grandad anybody could ever wish for." They added: "So many lives are now shattered that you're gone. You were loved by so many people, and we will all miss you forever."

Police have confirmed that both families are being supported by specially trained officers. The BBC Breakfast team, including hosts Jon Kay and Sarah Campbell, presented the update with solemn respect during Tuesday's programme, which also featured weather from Carol Kirkwood and news from correspondents.
