Father Jailed for 17 Years After Strangling Wife as Daughters Slept in Burton Latimer
A man has been sentenced to 17 years in prison after pleading guilty to murdering his wife in a violent attack that took place while their two young daughters slept in their bedrooms. Paul Knight, aged 35, strangled his wife, the talented artist Isobella "Izzy" Knight, at their semi-detached home in Burton Latimer, Northamptonshire, on June 13 last year.
Details of the Tragic Incident
The court heard that Knight attacked his wife in a fit of rage after she informed him of her intention to leave the marriage. Izzy Knight, described by her family as a "wonderful mum" and "beautiful, inside and out," had been subjected to controlling behaviour and psychological abuse by her husband in the years leading up to her death.
Following the murder, Knight attempted to conceal the crime by asking his mother to care for their children, falsely claiming that both he and Izzy were unwell. After the children were collected, he made several unsuccessful suicide attempts before crashing his car in a nearby McDonald's car park.
Discovery and Investigation
Police officers responding to the car crash became suspicious of Knight's behaviour and decided to search his home. It was during this search that they discovered Izzy's body. A post-mortem examination confirmed that she died from pressure applied to her neck, consistent with strangulation.
Family Tributes and Impact
In emotional statements, Izzy's family paid tribute to her life and legacy. Her mother, Helena, emphasised that Izzy was more than just a victim, describing her as a loving mother, treasured daughter, talented artist, and devoted friend. She highlighted Izzy's dedication to providing for her children and her vibrant personality.
Izzy's father, Tim, recalled her as a shining presence who encouraged her children to discover their talents. He revealed that the murder occurred after Izzy made it clear she had endured enough of Knight's abusive behaviour and wanted to separate, with plans in place to co-parent for the benefit of their daughters, aged six and three.
The two children are now under the care of Izzy's mother, Helena, and her partner, David, as the family vows to keep Izzy's memory alive for them.
Legal Outcome and Sentencing
Paul Knight pleaded guilty to murder, leading to his 17-year prison sentence. The case underscores the severe consequences of domestic violence and the tragic outcomes that can arise when abusive relationships escalate.
