Results are gradually emerging after voters across London went to the polls on Thursday, with all 32 boroughs in the capital holding elections. Additionally, the mayors of Tower Hamlets, Croydon, Newham, Hackney, and Lewisham are being elected.
Overview of London Results So Far
London has traditionally been a Labour stronghold, with the party holding majority control in 21 councils. However, the political landscape has shifted significantly since the 2022 London elections. Labour, under Sir Keir Starmer, has seen a decline in popularity since becoming the governing party in 2024. Polling among younger and more left-leaning voters suggests that the Green Party has benefited most from this shift.
The Green Party, led by Zack Polanski, aims to increase its councillor count in the capital, having held only 49 seats before the election. Pre-election polling by YouGov indicated that this number could rise substantially, and that Reform UK might top the poll in three councils. Neither party has previously achieved the highest vote share on any London council.
Mayoral Election Results
Contests have taken place in 136 local authorities across England, including major cities and the entirety of London. These elections also cover a mix of urban authorities, rural districts, and several county councils. This represents the largest set of local elections in England in three years and serves as a key test for all political parties.
Of the 5,013 seats being contested this year, Labour is defending 2,557, the Conservatives 1,362, the Liberal Democrats 684, and other parties (including independents) 410.
